An accessory dwelling unit (ADU), a granny flat, in-law suite, or backyard home, can add rental income or family space. Whether Weehawken allows one, and how big, comes down to the town’s zoning and your specific lot. Here’s what we know, and how to check yours.
We have not sourced Weehawken's zoning ordinance or its ADU rules yet, so we cannot say what Weehawken permits on your lot. That is our gap, not Weehawken's. Run your address to see what we hold for it today.
Sources: Township of Weehawken Code Chapter 23 (Zoning), Section 23-5.2 (R-1 One Family Residence Zone), Section 23-5.3 (R-2 One, Two and Three Family Residence Zone) and Section 23-6.4 (Accessory structures). Read 2026-10-03 from the zoneomics mirror of Chapter 23 (ecode360 returns 403 to direct fetch). R-1 permits 'One family dwelling, not more than one such dwelling per lot'; R-2 permits two- and three-family dwellings, 'not more than one dwelling per lot'. Section 23-6.4 limits residential accessory structures to garages, garden structures, sheds, decks, playhouses, greenhouses, gazebos, flagpoles and private pools, one accessory structure per lot, one story and 15 ft maximum, at least 5 ft from the rear line and 3 ft from side lines. No accessory dwelling unit or accessory apartment is provided for.
See exactly what your lot allowsNew Jersey has no single statewide ADU law. Each of the state's 564 municipalities, Weehawken (Hudson County, NJ) included, sets its own zoning for accessory dwelling units (granny flats, in-law suites, backyard homes). Whether you can build one in Weehawken, how big, and how tall depends on the town's ordinance and your specific lot. We have not sourced Weehawken's zoning ordinance yet, so we cannot tell you what Weehawken permits on your lot. That is a gap in our record, not a finding about Weehawken. What we can do today is measure the lot itself: its dimensions, what already sits on it, and its flood exposure.

We have not sourced Weehawken's ordinance yet, so we cannot confirm what it permits. Run your Weehawken address and we will show you what we do hold for that lot, and say plainly what we do not.
A detached ADU in Weehawken typically runs $150,000 to $300,000+ all-in depending on size, site, and finishes. The build is financed and the rent helps carry the loan. You own the home.
Some NJ towns require owner-occupancy; others (like Jersey City) don't. We check Weehawken's specific ordinance for you when you run your address.
