An accessory dwelling unit (ADU), a granny flat, in-law suite, or backyard home, can add rental income or family space. Whether Harrison allows one, and how big, comes down to the town’s zoning and your specific lot. Here’s what we know, and how to check yours.
We have not sourced Harrison's zoning ordinance or its ADU rules yet, so we cannot say what Harrison permits on your lot. That is our gap, not Harrison's. Run your address to see what we hold for it today.

Read 2026-10-03 from the zoneomics mirror of the Municode text and from the 2026-02-17 Mayor and Council agenda carrying Ordinance No. 1555. Section 17-4: 'the establishment of any use not expressly permitted by this Chapter shall be prohibited.' Schedule II-A permits detached single-family dwellings in SF-1 to 3-F, two-family in 2F-1, 2F-2 and 3-F, and lists as residential accessory uses only boarders, sheds and pools, signs, parking and family day care. The replacement Schedule I in Ord. 1555 (introduced 2026-02-17, adding 100% affordable housing) likewise lists no accessory dwelling unit. No ADU or accessory apartment use exists.
See exactly what your lot allowsNew Jersey has no single statewide ADU law. Each of the state's 564 municipalities, Harrison (Hudson County, NJ) included, sets its own zoning for accessory dwelling units (granny flats, in-law suites, backyard homes). Whether you can build one in Harrison, how big, and how tall depends on the town's ordinance and your specific lot. We have not sourced Harrison's zoning ordinance yet, so we cannot tell you what Harrison permits on your lot. That is a gap in our record, not a finding about Harrison. What we can do today is measure the lot itself: its dimensions, what already sits on it, and its flood exposure.
